Position: Senior Merchant Outreach and Recovery Coordinator, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce
Reports to: Senior Director, Neighborhood Economic Development, Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce
Position: Full-Time (Exempt)

Position Overview: 
The Merchant Outreach and Recovery Coordinator is to act as liaison and support
specialist to the commercial corridors of ​Southeast Brooklyn, with an initial
focus on Sheepshead Bay, Canarsie, and Avenue U (Homecrest).  The Coordinator will
be required to make regular visits to these neighborhoods to meet with businesses and
local stakeholders in the area and to develop a robust partnership between these
communities and the Brooklyn Chamber.  A large portion of the position will be field
based, with occasional work required over the weekends during events.

Job Description and Responsibilities:
The Merchant Outreach and Recovery Coordinator will serve as the eyes, ears, and
voice of local area merchants in order to support Brooklyn Chamber’s neighborhood
economic development goals in Sheepshead Bay, Canarsie, and Avenue U.  The
Coordinator will be required to:

  • Build relationships with local stakeholders including but not limited to: 1)
    local businesses, 2) anchor institutions, 3) community organizations and
    community boards, 4) elected officials, and 5) police
  • Develop (or expand upon) relationships in City government overseeing Open
    Streets and Open Restaurants programs
  • Obtain training on Community District Needs Assessment (CDNA)
    development and engage in activities to support this work as mandated by
    NYC Dept. of Small Business Services
  • Obtain training on Small Business Resource Network tools 
  • Assist the small business recovery team with managing caseloads in the
    assigned neighborhoods –  and conduct data entry for assigned cases 
  • Create a database of commercial storefronts in each commercial corridor
    and conduct at least two vacancy surveys per year
  • Develop and implement ideas for neighborhood marketing and promotion
  • Identify key business needs in each community
  • Apply for, organize, and run community events working collaboratively with
    local organizations and community boards
  • Attend local merchant association meetings 
  • Develop a strategy paper on the pros and cons of BID formation in each
    neighborhood to be presented to senior staff – or provide support to these
    activities if already underway
  • Provide general information on the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce and its
    services, and assist as needed at Brooklyn Chamber and agencywide
    events

Required Skills
An effective Coordinator will demonstrate competence in: relationship building, decision
making, communications, independent work, and planning and organizing.  Ease and
familiarity with technology will be a major plus.

Desired Qualifications:

  • College degree and minimum 3 years work experience in policy, government, economics, marketing, or related field
  • Familiarity with MS 365 Office (especially Excel) required, proficiency with Salesforce and social media platforms a plus
  • Bilingual ability desired
  • Brooklyn residency or strong familiarity with ​Southeast Brooklyn neighborhoods preferred
